“I have been doing a lot of DAV and Veterans events across the state to make them the highlight of the DAV to bring in new members of all branches including the men and woman of the LGBTQ community to come together as one to share what veterans want and need to fight for the benefits that we all deserve. I learned a lot since the last leadership meeting in Rochester. I had the pleasure of riding the train back with the Adjutant PDC, Thomas Wohlrab. As we became heroes on the train by the another train that had broke down and we had to rescue that train and bring it back into New York. I would like to commend him by putting up with all my stories as we learned a lot from each other. I think I talked his ear off as he was trying to get some rest! Ok, so you can imagine where the train is packed, and he can't sit anywhere else but right beside me! I want to congratulate him on being a team player. I want to wish everyone a great holiday season. Commander Sander has put me in charge of the awards and twitter assignments. I want to thank all the members of the board that have been helping me along the way to adjust to this position. If anybody has the names of anyone who they want to get an award for please get them to me within the next few months via my email: John.Scalesi@DAVNY.org.” -John Scalise 8/19/2024
DAV Commander Shannon Sander Champions New Legislation to Support Veteran Caregivers
Reported By Our DAV Dept of New York Team: B.A.Mott
Rochester, N.Y.— In a powerful show of support for the families who tirelessly care for our nation’s veterans, Shannon Sander, Commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Department of New York, has thrown her full backing behind new legislation aimed at bolstering benefits for veteran caregivers. The bill, introduced by Congressman Joe Morelle during a press conference in Rochester, seeks to address the critical needs of those who serve as primary caregivers to disabled veterans.
Commander Sander, a vocal advocate for veteran caregivers, underscored the importance of the Veteran Caregiver Re-education, Re-employment, and Retirement (Veteran Caregiver RRR) Act, which aims to expand essential services, including healthcare benefits, employment assistance, and retirement planning for these caregivers.
"It's desperately needed because our caregivers do so much," Sander stated emphatically during the press conference. "When veteran caregivers make the noble choice to selflessly serve their loved one, they knowingly do so at the expense of their professional lives. This bill begins to correct an unintended hindrance for caregivers who require more employment and retirement support than is currently available."
The proposed legislation would ensure that caregivers do not lose access to healthcare benefits abruptly after their caregiving role ends, a situation Sander highlighted as a significant hardship. The bill proposes extending health care coverage under the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) for up to 180 days post-caregiving, unless the caregiver was dismissed for reasons such as fraud or abuse.
Moreover, the legislation would provide financial support for caregivers seeking to reenter the workforce, including reimbursement of up to $1,000 for professional licensure fees. It would also offer access to VA training modules to help caregivers maintain their professional credentials.
Sander emphasized the vital role this legislation plays in supporting caregivers' transition back into the workforce. "They didn’t turn their backs on their veteran when needed the most, and we must remember how their sacrifice impacts their lives when the caregiving mission ends. This bill provides the necessary tools to help them move forward."
In addition to employment support, the Veteran Caregiver RRR Act would offer retirement planning services and bereavement counseling, recognizing the emotional and financial toll that caregiving can take. Sander lauded these provisions, noting that they are crucial for caregivers who often put their own futures on hold to care for their loved ones.
The bill has garnered bipartisan support and has been co-sponsored by key figures in both the House and Senate. It has also received endorsements from several nationwide veterans' advocacy groups, including the Wounded Warrior Project, the Military Officers Association of America, and the American Legion.
As a leader within the DAV, Commander Sander's endorsement of the Veteran Caregiver RRR Act underscores the significance of this legislation in providing comprehensive support to those who care for our nation's heroes. Her advocacy reflects the DAV's ongoing commitment to ensuring that veteran caregivers receive the recognition and benefits they rightfully deserve.

Friends and naval personnel came together to honor Grace Moran as she reached a remarkable milestone – her 100th birthday. Grateful for the recognition, Grace expressed her thanks, reflecting on a life filled with gratitude and service.
"I've been truly fortunate, and this recognition means the world to me. Thank you all so very much," Grace beamed.
Among the tributes, gratitude was extended for Grace's service during World War II. Joining the WAVES after Pearl Harbor, Grace eagerly embraced the opportunity to contribute. Despite being just 20 years old, she completed rigorous training and served as a Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class, caring for wounded servicemen.
Her dedication didn't go unnoticed. Honored by the Disabled American Veterans and hailed as a Bright Spot for her inspiration, Grace's positivity and can-do spirit left a lasting impression.
In a touching gesture, Shannon Sander, DAV State Commander Elect and State Ambassador to the Military Women's Memorial, presented a proclamation honoring Grace Moran with the "Living Legend Award" for her exceptional service to our country. The Military Women's Memorial Living Legend program recognizes an elite group of only 130 military women whose stories of service provide inspiration and example for all to appreciate.
As Grace celebrates a century of life, her story serves as a beacon of resilience and service. Her legacy reminds us of the sacrifices made during WWII and the enduring spirit that unites communities. Cheers to Grace Moran – a true hero among us.

Recognizing the vital importance of supporting veterans' causes, they anticipate that the collaborative efforts between DAV and NYSSPA will foster increased awareness and support for the challenges faced by disabled veterans.

The selection as NYSSPA's Presidential Charity reflects the collective commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed for their country.
Did You Know: The roots of the Physician Assistance profession can be traced back to its military origins.
The physician assistant (PA) profession began as an effort to simultaneously address two Vietnam War-era problems: 1) highly skilled combat medics returning home without a specific title or skill set readily translatable to a civilian career, and 2) a significant physician shortage during a high-casualty conflict. The PA concept that began in the late 1960s thus held great promise for its original students and the military, as well as a larger civilian population seeking advanced medical care. In 1967, the first class of PAs completed their training and were awarded certificates by Duke University. While all military services (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard) have conducted PA training since 1971, the Army has trained and retains the largest number of PAs in the Department of Defense (DoD) throughout this time [1]. Similarly, as the PA profession celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017, historical reflection shows increasing depth and breadth of PA practice, both within and outside the Army.

Lady Columbia: A Symbol of Freedom and Democracy
Lady Columbia, a symbolic figure representing the United States and the concepts of freedom and democracy, holds a significant place in American history and culture. Although less well-known than her male counterpart, Uncle Sam, Lady Columbia embodies the spirit of liberty and justice in her own right.
The Origins of Lady Columbia
Lady Columbia first emerged as a national symbol in the early 19th century, during the War of 1812, a conflict between the United States and the British Empire. Her name is a reference to Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer who played a pivotal role in the discovery of the Americas.
Visual Representation
Often depicted as a graceful and strong woman, Lady Columbia typically wears a flowing gown, a star-spangled diadem or crown, and holds a shield and a laurel wreath. Her attire and accessories mirror the nation's flag, further cementing her identity as a personification of the United States.
Lady Columbia in Art and Literature
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Lady Columbia appeared in various forms of artistic expression. She was featured in paintings, sculptures, and literature, symbolizing the values of democracy, freedom, and the American way of life. Her presence is particularly prominent in political cartoons, where she often encouraged patriotism and civic duty.
Lady Columbia and American Ideals
Lady Columbia's significance transcends mere visual representation. She symbolizes the core values that the United States was built upon: liberty, justice, and the pursuit of happiness. She has been invoked in times of war and peace, representing the collective aspirations of the American people.
Modern Relevance
While Uncle Sam remains more recognizable in popular culture, Lady Columbia continues to play a role in national symbolism and serves as a reminder of the enduring principles of the United States. She has appeared in various contexts, including the design of medals, military insignia, state seals, the DAV Seal, and also schools such as Columbia University.
Conclusion
Lady Columbia, often overshadowed by other symbols of American identity, remains an important figure in the nation's history. She symbolizes the ideals that the United States was founded upon, and her representation as a strong, graceful woman continues to inspire and resonate with Americans as a reminder of their shared values of freedom, democracy, and justice. In a nation built on such principles, Lady Columbia stands as a timeless representation of the American spirit.
